Recently, Harvard Summit for Young Leaders in China (HSYLC) sponsored by Harvard Association for US-China Relations (HAUSCR) was held in Hangzhou. Two students, Xia Huining and Wang Xiaowen, from International Department of High School Attached to Shandong Normal University (AHS) were invited to this summit.
HAUSCR is an official organization of Harvard College and is a registered federal non-profit organization. It is a student-run organization committing to bridging the gap between the United States and China through a number of unique programs. HAUSCR’s flagship program, the annual HAUSCR Summit for Young Leaders in China (HSYLC), provides a week of exploration and development for Chinese high-school students conducted by Harvard undergraduates, faculty, and prominent leaders from both nations. It aims to bring the world’s top education resources to Chinese outstanding high school students.
During the nine-day summit, Xia Huining and Wang Xiaowen experienced the Harvard teaching tradition and spirit in a pure English environment and made an in-depth exploration on their academic level though a series of well-designed learning and practicing challenges, such as the social entrepreneurship competition,“China Thinks Big” and the selective week-long program “H-week”. In addition, they listened to some successful people’s stories and learned the hardships behind their success, such as musicians Huang Shujun, Hu Yanbin, entrepreneur pioneers Fan Ling, Long Yu and so on. Under the guidance of the summit’s founder, Tang Meijie, they set a clear learning direction for how to apply for an American university. Besides, the Student Seminars provided them with the great pleasure of doing research with Harvard students, from whom they saw what they have pursued all the time, which is also the Harvard school motto, “Truth”.
Through communication with the Harvard students, students from AHS learned that there may be no “the only truth”. As long as you are determined to explore it, truth will be a part of your life and be your lifetime pursuit.
